Watch me Demonstrate…

- how to make stamps out of clay - how to add impressed and incised textures - how to mix slip to the right viscosity for dimensional, raised slip trailing - multiple ways to apply slip to pots, including how to use an AirPen - strategies for fixing, hiding, and incorporating mistakes as they happen throughout decorating And you’ll see it all clearly thanks to Alex Carros Media shooting everything in 4K!

Make Marks with Confidence!

The only way to make confident marks is to practice… a lot!  But in the meantime, I will teach you strategies for “faking it” to turn awkward, uneven marks into much more elegant and intentional looking ones by refining the clay throughout its drying process.

My Preferred Tools & Materials

I share what tools and materials work well for creating slip trailing that looks like fondant molded to the surface of the pots, how to make thin lines, and how I capitalize on all that texture during glazing. Plus, if you like mixing your own clay bodies and glazes, I’ve included the recipes I use with tips on how to mix and apply them.

Hi! I’m Taylor. I’ll be your instructor.

I’ve been making pots since I first took a ceramics class in 2013. After five years of atmospheric firing and a little tendonitis, I switched to cone 6 electric firing in graduate school. I started adding layers of texture and color to my work, chasing surfaces that have a similar sense of richness, depth, and asymmetry as the surfaces I used to get out of wood and soda kilns. I’ve been loading layers of decoration techniques on pots for thousands of hours ever since!  I’ve been teaching workshops in person at ceramics institutions across the US and online since 2021. I’m excited to expand my reach more broadly and affordably by offering this virtual course to anyone interested in learning from me online!

I give my clay body and glaze recipes to students to try for themselves, and I have written down my glazing process for your perusal in this course, but I do not have the process recorded. I’m happy to discuss any questions you may have. Email me at [email protected]. Do you offer refunds? Due to the digital nature of this content which can be watched fully in under three hours, refunds are not offered. I want to take this workshop in person, not online. How can I? I recommend signing up for my newsletter at the bottom of www.taylorsijan.com for updates about upcoming in person workshops.
